People often do not realize the severe effects that a non-violent felony conviction can have on their lives. As the pictured chart shows, the collateral effects are far-reaching. There are certain businesses and occupations you can no longer pursue. A lot of companies will not hire you. You can’t get a lot government benefits, loans, or grants. You no longer allowed to vote or hold office. You may have registration, notification, and residency restrictions on you. You can no longer possess a firearm. Some housing will not allow you to live in a certain area or development, including federally funded housing. Your family and domestic rights can also be affected. Educational opportunities will also be limited. Your whole life becomes different and your opportunities for advancement and success often disappear.
